Rolling Stone’s top 10 Beatles songs of all time

In Rolling Stone’s new Special Collectors Edition issue, we count down the 100 greatest songs from the greatest band of all time: The Beatles. Check out the top 10 songs now, before the issue hits stands:

#10: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
The lyrics for George Harrison’s first truly great Beatles song began as a deliberate accident — and it wasn’t until Harrison pulled Eric Clapton in to play guitar that the arrangement was finished.

#9: “Come Together”
Originally intended by Lennon as a campaign song for LSD guru Timothy Leary’s campaign for California’s governor in 1970, this became the last song all four Beatles cut in the studio together.

#8: “Let It Be”
McCartney channeled Aretha Franklin’s soul in “Let It Be,” recorded during the peak of the Beatles’ troubled times. A month after its 1970 release, McCartney announced the band had broken up

#7: “Hey Jude”
McCartney’s lyrics for “Hey Jude” were inspired by John and Cynthia Lennon’s five-year-old son, Julian — but Lennon first thought McCartney was singing to him about his relationship with Yoko Ono.

#6: “Something”
Before it became the second-most-covered Beatles song behind “Yesterday,” Lennon said this unexpected Harrison track was “the best track on [Abbey Road]” and McCartney called it “the best song [Harrison has] written.”

#5: “In My Life”
“In My Life,” featuring Lennon’s most personal lyrics up to the song’s release, is one of only a handful of Lennon-McCartney songs where the two strongly disagreed over who wrote what.

#4: “Yesterday”
The most covered song in history began as something called “Scrambled Eggs.” It also began as a dream.

#3: “Strawberry Fields Forever”
Lennon once said growing up “was scary because there was nobody to relate to.” Strawberry Field the place (a Liverpool children’s home near where Lennon grew up) represented those haunting childhood visions. With this song, Lennon conquered them forever.

#2: “I Want to Hold Your Hand”
“I Want to Hold Your Hand” was most American’s first exposure to the songwriting magic of Lennon and McCartney, setting off Beatlemania. It represented what producer George Martin calls “the apex of Phase One of the Beatles’ development.”

#1: “A Day in the Life”
The ultimate Lennon-McCartney collaboration, “A Day in the Life” wasn’t recognized as the band’s masterwork until the 80s, after Lennon’s death. It pairs lyrics inspired by the newspapers and Lennon’s own life with McCartney’s idea to have classical musicians perform what producer George Martin called an “orchestral orgasm.

Guilty Pleasure: Pampering Our Pets!

As the second installment of the theme highlighting Guilty Pleasures, we at PureSuasion would like to take the time to express our adoration for our pets!

How wonderful it is to come home to such un-adultered excitement and love! (And that applies to all animals: dogs, cats, birds, horses, fish… whatever animal is it you love and cherish AND PAMPER – this Guilty Pleasure is certainly yours too!)

For years, animals have been the apple to their owners’ eyes- and there is no shame in that! However, it is somewhat amusing to witness and confess the lengths we owners go to in order to pamper our pets. And we ALL are guilty of it….I mean, how are we supposed to pass up the opportunity to dress our small pups in a cute ballerina outfit? Who are we to deprive our pet of that joy??

The following excerpt describes a service that all of us who claim ‘pampering our pets’ as a Guilty Pleasure would LOVE to let our pet experience…that is, if we could join them!

“Pamper Your Pooch at Disney World’s Luxury Pet Resort”

“Pampered pooches and much-loved moggies can look forward to luxurious new accommodation when their owners visit Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Best Friends Pet Care Resort is scheduled to open on 27 August and will offer not only boarding, but bedtime stories, a grooming salon and a water park for dogs.

The pet friendly resort boasts more than 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, including air-conditioned interiors, outdoor runs and play areas, and an expansive private dog park.

The facility will accommodate up to 270 dogs and 30 cats for both daytime and overnight boarding. And if you really want to push the boat out, you can rent four expansive VIP (very important pet) suites with television, raised bedding and private outdoor yards – no less.

Feline guests will spend their visit in the separate “Kitty City” pavilion, away from the dogs, in two and four-room condos. All suites and condos are designed to provide comfort and privacy and will be cleaned daily with hospital-grade disinfectants, says the company.

Dennis Dolan, president and chief executive officer of Best Friends Pet Care said: “Best Friends has long been the industry leader for boarding, and this will be our crown jewel. We’ve taken the ‘best of breed’ in every category to create the perfect environment for pets.”

He continued: “Our goal is to ensure that pets staying with us have a fun, action-packed vacation – just like their families vacationing at Walt Disney World.”

Additional upgrades include ice cream treats, bottled water and premium/orthopedic bedding. Feline guests can also enjoy private playtimes, activity toys in their suites, and treats such as cookies and milk or tuna on a Ritz biscuit.”

To our Readers: what are your thoughts on the subject?

Is pampering your pet YOUR Guilty Pleasure?

Are you slightly embarrassed to admit the extent to how much you love your pet?

{side note: there is NO SHAME in admitting something you truly love!!}

What premium perks do you bestow upon your beloved pet?

Do your friends tease you for doing “unnecessary things” for your pets happiness?

Have you heard of any unusual ways some owners show their

devotion to their furry (or feathery!) friends??

As always, treat the comment section as your personal confessional, if you will- as the place for your thoughts and opinions to be heard!

So, without further ado, comment away!!

“The Lucky List: Most Stylish TV Characters”

Whether for prime time or not, hours and hours of preparation go into perfecting the clothing that characters wear in various television series. Consumers look to their favorite shows to see what the next big thing to wear will be and even more designers wish to see certain television personas highlight their work. Several people may write this off as a detail not worth spending too much time on. But here’s the thing- viewers DO notice!

Most trends start off either on the big screen or on television shows. Viewers recognize details and run with them- from hair styles, to set decorations, to their favorite character’s house slippers.

Fortunately for us, Lucky Magazine continues to compile a list of TV’s most memorable contributors to style as we know it today.

Read the list. Enjoy the pictures. Share what ya think!

Samantha Stephens in Bewitched

Her spot-on ’60s ensembles were always topped off by loosely curled hair and a perfectly applied swipe of eyeliner.

Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girls

Blake Lively’s uptown-girl wardrobe is sleek and sophisticated, with slim denim, knee-high boots, and tons of layers.

Mary Tyler Moore in Mary Tyler Moore

Her classic, swingy, just-a-bit-sexy-but-still-utterly-professional look has stood the test of time. We like to think that if Michael Kors had been designing back then, her closet would have been filled with his pieces

Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City

With outfits that ranged from gorgeously glamorous to undeniably wacky, she took chances, mixed aesthetics, and celebrated fashion like no one else, before or since.

Kelly, Jill, and Sabrina in Charlie’s Angels

Sexy California style—from their endlessly layered hair to their tan-emphasizing, skin-revealing, body-celebrating outfits.

Lisa Turtle in Saved by the Bell

The epitome of over-the-top ’80s fashion. There wasn’t a wild pattern, color, or outfit that the show’s resident style maven Lisa Turtle couldn’t rock.

Ally McBeal in Ally McBeal

Calista Flockhart’s short skirts and sky-high strappy heels made lawyering (previously infamous for its singular unsexiness) look surprisingly hot.

Denise Huxtable in The Cosby Show

Lisa Bonet managed to pull together all the mismatched prints, vivid colors, and oversize separates of the ’80s and still come out looking fantastic.

Lucy Ricardo in I Love Lucy

Lucy always stole the screen—whether in an iconic ’50s housedress (complete with apron and pearls) or one of her many wacky costumes (remember Carmen Miranda?).

Laurie Partridge in The Partridge Family

Between her pin-straight, long-and-glossy hair, and her skinny sweaters with leg-lengthening bell-bottoms, Susan Dey’s ’70s style perfectly balanced innocence and all-out hotness.

Blossom in Blossom

The quirky style, the oversize dresses, and of course, the wild hats—it was all just endlessly endearing.

Ann Marie in That Girl

The poufy/flippy bob, the Courrèges-mod outfits, the lipstick, the flats, and the major eyelashes added up to Marlo Thomas’ kicky signature look.

Which of the above looks is your favorite?

Which TV characters inspire/inspired your real-life style?

Who did we miss? Which fashion “icons” not mentioned would you add to the list??

Guilty Pleasure: Foods

From time to time each one of us takes the time to pamper ourselves. (If you’re not doing so, shame on you! Go get a pedicure or something- I’m sure you deserve it!)

We at PureSuasion believe each women is deserving of some sort of indulgence, whether it’s to celebrate a milestone or simply to re-boot themselves. It’s about building confidence and not waiting too long until that energy wears off to remind yourself of your importance in this world.

The following article is the first installment highlighting the unique “Guilty Pleasures” that we all give into from time to time. We have our vices, and you have yours. And here, at the Cilea blog, is where we will share our most gratifying of discoveries!

5@5 – ‘Saveur’ editor-in-chief James Oseland

5@5 is a daily, food-related list from chefs, writers, political pundits, musicians, actors, and all manner of opinionated people from around the globe.

Guilty food pleasures: they’re so wrong, yet oh-so right. From neon-hued mac ‘n’ cheese to cheeseburger-flavored tortilla chips, seems everybody has one or five … even say, an editor-in-chief of a major food magazine.

James Oseland has been the editor-in-chief of ‘Saveur’ magazine since 2006, and also acts as judge on Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters.” Now, he’s ready to spill the beans and get some guilty food pleasures off his chest. This is a no judgment zone. Guilty, schmilty!

5 Foods I Am (Only Somewhat) Ashamed to Say I Love: James Oseland

1. Dr. Pepper
“Every time I take a sip of this stuff (I try to limit my annual consumption to no more than three cans), I am reminded of a line I heard someone say on Mary Hartman – the 1970s Norman Lear-produced soap opera satire – when I was about 13 years old: ‘Drink it; it’s delicious nectar of the gods.’ With its round-noted, cherry-esque flavors, it is exactly that, and more. Forget all the newfangled ‘artisanal,’ small-batch lemongrass-and-lavender sodas that are popping up like rabbits these days; Dr. Pepper is the most brilliant soft drink out there. Period.”

2. BBQ Potato Chips
“All varieties. All the time. From Kettle Chips to Wise to Ruffles, BBQ-flavored potato chips kick ass. They are salty and sweet and smoky and crisp and crunchy, and they come in the most gorgeous, sunset-y hues known to man. Is there anything more you could want from a food? (And they’re even better when washed down with a salt-counterbalancing swig of straight-from-the-can Dr. Pepper – which, in effect, kills two of my long-standing trash-food obsessions with one stone. Oh, rapture without end!)”

3. McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish Sandwiches
“I’m sorry, I know it is the height of foodie irresponsibility even to admit to setting foot inside the Evil Death Star that is McDonald’s, but the mega-chain’s Filet-O-Fish sandwiches are perfection on a bun. (The editor-in-chief of Saveur likes McDonald’s? Call the President!) From the crisp wedge of battered, fried fish to the dainty dab of tartar sauce, they are a miracle of food science. I remember that the first thing I wanted to eat upon returning the States after spending ten months in a South Indian village sleeping on a mat and eating a strict vegetarian diet was a Filet-O-Fish sammy. They are that important to me.”

4. Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars
“Okay, okay, there are some really sophisticated chocolates available nowadays. And, yes, many of those chocolates are produced using cacao farmed under some seemingly great, free-trade conditions. But when I need a chocolate fix, there is nothing more satisfying than a Hershey’s Bar. Its velvety mouth-feel and subtle, caramel-like sweetness connect to my pleasure sensors (and to happy childhood memories) in an immediate, primal way.”

5. Swiss Miss Creamy Vanilla Pudding Cups
“Admitting to loving this ‘food’ as much as I do kind of freaks me out. Pudding cups, in all forms, are pretty reprehensible foods, filled with all sorts of incredibly nasty synthetic things. But, God, do they taste good, especially the vanilla variety from Swiss Miss. Its smooth, buttery goodness makes me instantly forget all the bad things I’ve ever said about factory food.”

Got a food you’re a wee bit embarrassed to admit you eat? Consider the comment section your food confessional!

7 New Uses for a Penny

Clever ways to repurpose an everyday item.

1. Curtain Straightener

Make an opening in the bottom hem, slide in a penny or two, and sew the hem back up to keep curtains hanging level and stick-straight.

2. Tread Checker

Insert a penny into a groove of a tire with Lincoln’s head pointing into the tire. If the groove covers part of his head, you’re safe to drive; if the head is in full view, it’s time for new wheels. (The distance between the rim of a penny and Lincoln’s head is 1/16 of an inch―the minimum suggested tread depth.)

3. Table Anchor

If you dine out and the table is unsteady, put a coin under the leg to restore balance.

4. Game Token

Misplaced the thimble? No problem. Sub in a cent.

5. Reader Tip: Makeshift Screwdriver

Use a penny to screw open a toy’s battery pack.
Caroline Brant, Collegeville, Pennsylvania

6. Reader Tip: Icebreaker

Hand out pennies at your next gathering and ask each guest to share a story that happened during the year his or her penny was minted. If the coin predates a friend, let the person improvise.
Rachel Harrison Massa, Stamford, Connecticut

7. Reader Tip: Birdbath Cleaner

To ward off algae, toss in a few pre-1982 coins; the high copper content retards growth.
Suzanne Wesley, Terre Haute, Indiana

Why are eyelashes so important?

Long, dark, abundant lashes are the desire of women and men all over the world. Not only do thick, fuller, healthy lashes make eyes look bigger and brighter, they make facial features appear softer and give women and men a look of youthfulness and good health.

However, not all women and men are blessed with great lashes and, over time, even naturally thick lashes can become brittle and sparse due to beauty product usage and environmental damage and age.

Lashes grow similar to hair, in a cycle, hair is 2-6 year cycle, and lashes are 3-5 months cycle, when lashes and joint of eyelashes are damage they fall out before the cycle is complete.

That is were an eyelash growth stimulator comes in! It will give the eyelashes and joint the nutrients it need, to last the whole cycle and longer. The joint of the eyelashes will get strong, and healthy to allow more eyelashes to not only grow, it will strengthen the eyelashes that are there.

There is nothing like long eyelashes, making you feel sexy, and younger!

Doesn’t everyone deserve long, full, sexy eyelashes, we think so at Pure Suasion, that is why we created Cilea, the eyelash growth stimulator.

All of our ingredients are made for your eyelashes, the joint, and the skin around it. Using it twice a day you will start seeing results in 2-4 wks with no side effects. We all deserve a product that cares about us!
